Ads for Etsy sellers: social creatives that sell handmade
A practical guide to Instagram, TikTok and Facebook creatives for makers and marketplace sellers: what stops the scroll, ideas per craft, and how to keep your real piece in every frame.

Makers: your shop is not the problem. The listing is good, the reviews are kind, and still nobody new finds you. Ads for Etsy sellers fix that from the outside: short creatives on Instagram, TikTok and Facebook that send new buyers to your listing. This guide covers what those creatives should look like, ideas for your craft, and how to make them without a photographer.
One note before we start. This is about social creatives, not Etsy's own ad settings inside your shop dashboard. Vendy doesn't run those. It makes the images and videos you post on social platforms.
Ads for Etsy sellers live on social, not just on Etsy
Marketplace search shows your piece to people already looking for it. Social shows it to people who didn't know they wanted a hand-thrown mug until it crossed their feed. That second group is bigger, and nobody else is fighting for them with your exact product.
The same logic holds for all marketplace seller ads: Etsy, Amazon, TikTok Shop. You make the creative, upload it to Meta Ads Manager or TikTok Ads Manager, and point it at your listing. The creative is the part you control. It decides whether anyone stops.
Why a pretty product shot isn't enough
Here is the arguable claim: your best listing photo is probably your worst ad. A listing photo answers questions for someone already shopping. An ad has to interrupt someone who is not. Soft light, a slow pan and a line of text over it looks lovely and gets scrolled past.
In our own analysis of about 290,000 organic Instagram and TikTok posts, aesthetic B-roll with text was less than half as common among marketplace sellers' standout posts as among their ordinary ones. What showed up more: step-by-step tutorials, insider tips, humor and claims people want to argue with. Organic posts are not paid ads, and this is a pattern, not a guarantee. It's still the best map we have of what makes a buyer stop.

Five formats for marketplace seller ads
You don't need ten formats. Five cover almost every handmade shop:
- The odd first frame. Your piece somewhere it doesn't belong: a ring on a slice of cake, a mug on a snowbank. Static images built this way are fast to test. Vendy makes them with AI product photos: your item, a new scene, a headline, in 8 sizes.
- The close-up reveal. Hands, texture, unboxing, and the full piece only at the end. That's a product showcase video: 3–15 seconds, captions, music and your brand on the end card.
- The how-to carousel. Finished piece on slide one, then three or four steps: how to style it, care for it, gift it. Build it with AI carousel templates, 2 to 10 slides, all downloaded in one .zip.
- The insider tip. One thing buyers don't know: why a wooden wick crackles, why sterling tarnishes and how to fix it. Tips get saved and shared because they're useful on their own.
- The joke. A short, relatable bit about your craft. Humor travels further than polish, and it makes a small shop feel like a person.
Handmade product ads: ideas by craft
Generic advice only gets you so far. Here are starting points for handmade product ads in five common crafts. Steal the idea, not the look.
Candles
Open on something wrong: a candle melting into a puddle in a heatwave, with a question on screen about how the summer is treating your buyer. Then the fix: your soy blend that holds its shape. Or a care tip: why the first burn decides the whole life of the candle.
Ceramics
Scale and texture win. A mug held in two hands with steam, then a slow close-up of the glaze drip. Arguable line on screen: "Your coffee tastes different in a handmade mug." People will comment to agree or disagree, and both help.
Jewelry
Jewelry is small, so the first frame has to be big. Fill the screen with the piece, then pull back to show it worn. A how-to carousel works well here: three ways to layer one necklace, or how to clean silver at home.
Crochet and knits
The craft itself is the hook. A finished piece that looks like something else (food, an animal, a plant) stops the scroll on its own. Follow it with the honest number: how many hours one piece takes. That line answers the price question before anyone asks.
Print-on-demand
The design is the product, so put it in a life: the tee on a messy weekend, the tote at a farmers market, the notebook open on a desk. Make three scenes for three buyers and see which one wins. More scene ideas are in our product video ideas.

Will AI fake my handmade work?
A fair worry. Makers sell the opposite of mass production, and a lot of AI imagery looks exactly like mass production. If an ad shows a glaze you never made, the buyer who opens the box gets something else. That costs you a review, and maybe a refund.
Here is how Vendy handles it. It starts from your photo of the real piece and keeps it as it is: color, shape, label and logo unchanged. No redrawn logos, no invented details. What changes is the scene around it: the surface, the light, the headline. Your mug stays your mug. It just gets a better kitchen.
Two honest limits. First, Vendy can't film your hands at the wheel. Process videos are yours, and they're worth shooting on your phone. Second, AI UGC ads use an AI creator who talks about your product. That creator is an avatar, not a real customer, so never present it as a review.
How to make ads for Etsy sellers in one afternoon
- Pick one bestseller. It already sells, so an ad has the best chance to pay back.
- Shoot one clean photo. A phone shot on a plain surface in daylight is enough.
- Write three openers. One role call-out, one insider tip, one arguable claim.
- Make the set. Two or three static ads, one carousel and one short Etsy product video for Reels and TikTok.
- Upload and link. Download the files, add them in Meta Ads Manager or TikTok Ads Manager, and send the click to your listing.
- Keep the winner. After a few days, pause what nobody stops for and make new versions of what works.

Questions makers ask
Is this the same as Etsy's own ads?
No. Etsy's ads run inside Etsy search and you set them up in your shop. This guide is about creatives for Instagram, TikTok and Facebook. Vendy makes those creatives. It doesn't buy media, set budgets or post for you.
I have no money for creative. Is this for me?
That's the most common reason makers never run ads. A photographer per product doesn't add up at handmade margins. One phone photo in Vendy gives you images, carousels and short videos, and every plan includes every tool. Plans are on the pricing page.
Can I use the same video on my listing?
Vendy videos run 3 to 15 seconds and come in 9:16, 4:5, 1:1 and 16:9. Check your marketplace's current video rules before you upload. You hold full commercial rights to every file, so using it on a listing is up to you.
Takeaways
- Ads for Etsy sellers work best on social, where buyers aren't searching yet.
- A pretty shot with text over it gets scrolled past. Open with a role call-out, a tip, a joke or an arguable claim.
- Use ideas from your own craft: melting candles, glaze close-ups, worn jewelry, crochet that looks like something else.
- Keep the real piece in every frame. Change the scene, never the product.
- Start with one bestseller and one photo, test a small set, keep what works.
